Are machinery dealerships open for business?
Absolutely, as this FAQ is being written, Australian machinery dealerships are still open for business and very much welcoming your patronage.
Most machinery dealerships have responded well to the COVID-19 precautions suggested by government. While most have asked staff, including sales personnel to work from home where possible, they are still taking orders via phone and email and responding to leads received via constructionsales.com.au.

Does visiting a dealership or showroom expose me to coronavirus?
It’s common sense to take precautions (more so if you are in an at risk group) but there are no reasons why a visit to a dealership should expose you to any more risk of contracting COVID-19 than a trip to the shops – and dealers still have stock on their ‘shelves’.
Major dealerships have assured patrons that they are taking all the necessary steps to keep their premises clean and safe, but urge customers to practice social distancing (at least 1.5m) and avoid any direct contact such as handshakes.
If you have any doubts, check with the dealership via telephone or email regarding the COVID-19 precautions it has taken.

Am I safe test driving a machine?
At the risk of being flippant, you’re arguably more likely to get hurt in an accident when test driving than contracting COVID-19… That aside, it’s important to take proper precautions before driving a ‘strange’ machine.
Ask the dealer what precautions they have taken to ensure the vehicle is safe and clean. Failing that, here are some measures you can take to minimise the risk.
1. Consider cleaning the vehicle with an alcohol-based disinfectant or wipes before you drive it.
2. Ideally wear gloves while cleaning it and avoid harsh cleaners (ie: bleach).
3. The touch points you should target inside the cab include the key fob, steering wheel, transmission shifter, joystick, door handles and other places you might touch.
Will a dealer bring a machine to me to test or for delivery?
As different dealerships have different policies, we recommend calling to ask the question beforehand but if you’re a serious enough buyer, the dealerships should make it happen.
If you’ve bought a machine, it’s reasonable to expect it to be delivered. Transport and logistics aren’t affected by the shutdown for now, so that would not be an issue.
However, do ensure the appropriate measures are taken, ie social distancing during handover, no physical contact etc.
Will COVID-19 affect waiting lists and delivery times for new machines?
This is a hard question to answer briefly. Because, well… Frankly, it varies across make, model, country of manufacture, and so on…
There are no shortages of machinery for sale at Australian dealerships, right here and right now, but there has been disruptions at manufacturing plants across the world which would inevitably affect availability on certain models and will affect delivery times.
In short, ask your dealer. And because of the dollar depreciation, customers risk paying a much higher price that they would in the near future for new models coming into the country so if you’re serious about buying, start enquiring now.
What about parts and services?
Dealerships are still accepting orders for parts but strongly urge for these orders to be placed online or over the phone. Some dealerships are offering designated pick-up points for customers to pick up their orders without having to come in contact with another person.
Deliveries will also be made with social distancing and proper hygiene measures in place.
Field technicians will still continue to look after customers, dealerships have assured, but urged customers to allow technicians to do their jobs with enough space around them and to observe the 1.5m social distancing rule.
